What is citrine?
Citrine is the yellow variety of quartz, named after the French citron, lemon. Natural citrine is rare and usually pale. Most citrine sold today is amethyst or smoky quartz that has been heated above 200–300 °C, which turns it a deeper orange-yellow. It has long been called the “merchant's stone” or “money stone.”

Citrine meaning
In crystal practice, citrine is the stone of abundance. Its old nickname, the merchant's stone, reflects a long tradition of keeping it for prosperity, and many shop owners still keep a piece in the register. People use it for money, success, confidence and a brighter, more positive mood.
How to use citrine
- Kept in your wallet, cash box or register
- Placed in the far-left corner of your home or office, the wealth corner in feng shui
- Held while saying money affirmations
- Worn for confidence before a big meeting
Citrine and the solar plexus chakra
Citrine is most often paired with the solar plexus chakra. For a simple chakra meditation, hold it or rest it on that spot and play 528 Hz, the tone paired with that chakra, using the session above.
How to cleanse and care for citrine
People cleanse crystals to clear the energy they've collected. Common ways are leaving citrine under the full moon overnight, passing it through sage smoke, resting it on a bed of salt or near a larger quartz cluster, or playing a singing bowl beside it (try our sound bath).
Citrine is a hard, durable quartz. A quick rinse is fine; like most colored stones, keep it out of hours of strong, direct sun.
How to tell if citrine is real
Natural citrine is usually pale yellow with even color. Bright orange citrine with white bases, often sold in clusters, is almost always heat-treated amethyst. It's still quartz, just not natural citrine.
