Rain sounds with no ads and a black screen

Plenty of videos say “no ads” in the title, and then a loud ad wakes you at 3 a.m. SleepHz isn't a video: the rain is made live in your browser, so there's nowhere for an ad to go. No ads, ever.

Tap Black screen in the player and the whole screen turns black while the rain keeps playing, so your phone gives off no light. Tap twice to come back. Set Auto-stop first if you want the rain to fade out on its own.

Why rain helps you sleep

Rain works like brown noise with texture. Its steady sound raises the background level of the room, so a door, a car or a cough stands out less and is less likely to wake you.

It may also help you unwind. In a brain-imaging study (Gould van Praag et al., Scientific Reports, 2017), 17 volunteers listened to natural and artificial soundscapes. During the natural sounds, their bodies shifted toward the calm “rest and digest” state, and their attention turned outward instead of inward. It was a small study, but it fits what many people feel: rain is easy to let go into.

How to fall asleep to rain sounds

  1. Pick a rain track and set the volume just loud enough to blur the room's sounds.
  2. Set Auto-stop: 1 hour to fall asleep, or up to 8 hours to sleep through.
  3. Tap Black screen and put the phone face down or out of reach.
  4. Breathe slowly with the rain. When your mind wanders, go back to the sound.

Rain sounds vs white noise

White noise is a bright, even hiss that's best at covering sudden high sounds. Rain is softer and more natural, with a gentle rhythm, so many people find it easier to fall asleep to. Want to compare? Try white, pink, brown and green noise side by side.
