What is an aura?
An aura is described as a field of subtle energy around the body, unique to each person, that shifts with your thoughts, feelings and health. The word comes from the Latin and Greek aura, meaning “breeze” or “breath.”
The colors most people know today were popularized by the writer C. W. Leadbeater in Man Visible and Invisible (1903). In The Inner Life (1910) he connected auras with the chakras, which is why each aura color matches a chakra and its frequency.

How to see your aura
- Stand or sit in soft, natural light in front of a plain white or light wall.
- Hold your hand out at arm's length, fingers spread, against the wall.
- Relax your eyes and look just past your fingers, not at them, for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Notice the faint glow or haze that seems to outline your fingers. Many people see white or pale blue first.
- Keep your gaze soft and practice daily. With time, many people describe seeing color.
The same soft-gaze practice works with a friend standing in front of a plain wall, or with your reflection in a mirror.
Aura photography: how does it work?
Aura cameras, introduced by Guy Coggins in 1992, use sensors you rest your hands on. They read biofeedback from your skin and turn it into a colored cloud around your photo, which is why a reading can change from day to day.
Kirlian photography, discovered by Semyon Kirlian in 1939, is a different method: it records a glowing outline around an object placed on photographic film with a high-voltage charge.
How to cleanse your aura
- Sound: singing bowls and steady tones are a classic way to clear energy. Try the sound bath or the chakra alignment.
- Smoke: many people pass sage or palo santo smoke around their body.
- Water and salt: a warm bath with sea salt or Epsom salt.
- Nature: walk barefoot on grass or sand, or sit in the sun.
- Crystals: hold clear quartz or black tourmaline while you breathe slowly.
- Breath and intention: picture light washing over you and clearing away anything heavy, with an affirmation to set the tone.
Can your aura color change?
Yes. In most traditions your aura shifts with your mood, health and focus, so you may have one main color with others moving through it. To invite a color in, work with its chakra: play its frequency, use its affirmations and spend time with what that color represents, like nature for green or creative play for orange.
