What are the clairs?
In spiritual traditions, the clairs are the ways intuition reaches you. Some people see it, some hear it, some feel it and some simply know. They're often called spiritual gifts or psychic abilities: gifts you're born with and can grow, the way any talent grows with practice.
The word comes from French: clair means clear, and clairvoyance means clear vision (Wikipedia: Clairvoyance).
The 4 clairs at a glance
| Clair | The gift | How it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Clairvoyance | clear seeing | images, visions and flashes in the mind's eye |
| Clairaudience | clear hearing | words, sounds or a voice heard inwardly |
| Clairsentience | clear feeling | emotions and energy felt in the body |
| Claircognizance | clear knowing | sudden certainty, knowing without knowing how |
Some lists add clairalience (clear smelling) and clairgustance (clear tasting), when a scent or taste brings a message, often a loved one's perfume or cooking.
Clairvoyance: clear seeing
Clairvoyance is intuition that comes as pictures: an image in your mind's eye, a vivid dream, a flash of a place or a person, or colors around people. In tradition it's linked with the third eye, and it's said to take three forms: seeing the future (precognition), seeing the past (retrocognition) and seeing something happening far away (remote viewing).
Signs: vivid or meaningful dreams, strong visual imagination, “seeing” how something will turn out, noticing auras or light around people. To develop it, try visualization in meditation and keep a dream journal. See the third eye and the aura colors.
Clairaudience, clairsentience and claircognizance
- Clairaudience (clear hearing): words, sounds or a voice heard inwardly.
- Clairsentience (clear feeling): emotions and energy felt in the body.
- Claircognizance (clear knowing): sudden certainty, knowing without knowing how.
Which clair do you have?
- Think of the last time your intuition was right. Did you see it, hear it, feel it or just know it?
- Notice your everyday language. “I see what you mean,” “that sounds right,” “I have a feeling” and “I just know” often point to your strongest clair.
- Check your first reaction to people. A picture, a tone of voice, a feeling in your body or instant certainty?
- Write it down for a week. Patterns show up fast. The 30-Night Journal has space for exactly this.
How to develop your intuitive gifts
- Get quiet daily. Intuition speaks softly; a few minutes of meditation makes room for it. Try the session above.
- Ask, then notice. Ask a simple question and pay attention to the first image, word, feeling or knowing that comes.
- Write it down and check later. Tracking your hits builds trust in your gift.
- Protect your energy. Sensitive people pick up a lot; rest, time in nature and clearing rituals like sage help.
- Be patient and kind with yourself. Gifts grow with practice, not pressure.
Empaths and the clairs
An empath feels other people's emotions as if they were their own, which is closest to clairsentience. Many empaths also have a strong sense of knowing. See the empath guide and the heyoka empath.
