Clear quartz is quartz in its purest form, often called rock crystal. Quartz is the second most common mineral in Earth's crust and sets the value of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Squeeze a quartz crystal and it produces a tiny electric charge, which is why quartz keeps time in watches and clocks. The ancient Greeks believed clear quartz was ice frozen so hard it would never melt; their word krystallos gave us “crystal.”
