What is tiger's eye?

Tiger's eye is a golden-brown stone in the quartz family with a silky, moving shimmer called chatoyancy. The shimmer comes from quartz that grew alongside thin mineral fibers, which have since turned to iron oxide. Blue tiger's eye is called hawk's eye, and red tiger's eye is made by gently heating the golden stone.
